Casiokids (Moshi Moshi) Interview at Somewhere In The Universe

So after a hectic Thursday night at the 1st Horse Power with Designer Drugs, Chew Lips & Golden Filter we all converged once again at New Hero for a sold out gig with Moshi Moshi records ambassadors CASIOKIDS - usually here at Somewhere In The Universe we employ one of the Strong Look crew to do the interview (they kindly make all our videos for us) but on this occasion Casiokids felt compelled to interview themselves. The character development is lovely as the Casiokids frontman treads a thin line between being a band member asking questions of his bandmates, and being a suspiciously well informed journalist who seems to know every last detail about his interview subjects (you might need to jump over to Youtube itself to see him for this as our page format here cuts off the right hand side of this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW_GE41L4pQ)...listen as they talk cake parties, tour schedules, and influences...

Before the gig Mike Bradford of the very well informed blog The Reccomender (http://therecommender.net/) popped in and took some excellent photos of the band including the one at the top of this post and this fantastic mock up below of the band seemingly pissing up a nearby wall!

This Casiokids event was our last show before our upcoming 'Somewhere In The Universe' relaunch on Friday the 13th of November in what will be a newly refurbished New hero Nightclub (new bar, soundsystem, air con etc) and we couldn't have picked a lovlier night. I leave you with a video made by fans (as their no official video yet) of the Casiokids most recent single "Finn Bikkjen". They performed it on the night and I must say it's a danceable but extremely beautful melodic piece of pop - it pretty much took my breath away on the night...enjoy

Casiokids recommend 1985

A glowing endorsement for Saturday nights 1985 night at New Hero - Moshi Moshi artists Casiokids are from Norway but somehow they seemed to have attended our notorious 1985 night here in sunny Brighton like...a million times, quite often literally simulating the 'dancing on the ceiling' vibe via a two man lift that leaves legs flailing the air to the strains of the Lionel Richie classic. Ever the funsters we'll soon be posting a video of the full Casiokids interview from their 'Somewhere In The Universe' appearance (which was a fantastic gig) in which they interview themselves!! As luck would have it 1985 is every Saturday which means it falls on Halloween...basically this means New Hero is the only place to be come October 31st, don't believe us, then here's Casiokids recomendation:

When Jeremy Warmsley released his critically acclaimed debut album ''The Art of Fiction" in 2006, he soon became the unnoficial troubadour of the underground. Heralded in equal measure for his literary lyrical excusions and his captivating live performances with the likes of Daniel Johnston, Regina Spektor, Iron & Wine, Beirut and The Shins, JW became an undoubted cult figure. Mixing Four Tet-esque folktronica production with powerful, American-indie-influenced songs, he would cast a shadow over the emerging new folk scene. The likes of Slow Club, Noah & the Whale, Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling providing support slots or appearing on his cult YouTube pheonenon "Welcome To Our TV Show" which featured live performances direct from his living room.

2008 saw JW release his second Transgressive Records album, 'How We Became' co-produced by Arcade Fire/Bjork/Brian Eno collaborator Markus Dravs. Moving away from the cut up acoustic guitars of his debut, it displayed a vast leap forward in maturity and pop sensibility whilst remaining true to his experimental roots.

Along the way, he developed razor-sharp, inventive production skills. As well as producing his own albums, he also lent his time and talents to Emmy The Great's debut single. "Secret Circus" in 2005, which he produced and mixed, and has since produced (among other things) a track for a charty album curated by Bruce Parry (of BBC's Tribe series) on which he collaborated with old friends Mystery Jets, who provided musocal backing. (The Mystery Jets have proven ardent supporters bringing JW out fr support slots in every year since they first met in 2004). He also contributed keyboards to recordings by Johhny Flynn & Jay Jay Pistolet.

In 2009 JW is applyng his talents to a vast array of projects: new bands, new collaborators, production work, remixes & songwriting including being a occasional member of new music industry darlings - Fanfarlo's live band.A new JW album is expected in 2010 but not before a series of shows up and down the UK including this exclusive Brighton show in the super intimate surroundings of New Hero on Friday October 23rd!

Katie Stelmanis (Vice Mag) Interview at Somewhere In The Universe

We've debuted a number of very important artists at New Hero Nightclub - the first Brighton gigs for Little Boots (her first anywhere actually - we'll keep saying it), Boy Crisis, The Golden Filter, La Roux etc. but we'll wager that Katie Stelmanis is one of the most important or at least best acts we've come into contact with - her classically trained vocals and modern pagan music creates a sound we were immediately hypnotised by...as were Vice Magazine who quickly signed her to their record label and featured her in the magazine pretty much every month. We billed here as 'Like Bat For Lashes Vs Kate Bush Vs The Knife' and in fact Bat For Lashes herself made an appearance at New Hero that night to see what all the fuss was about -here's a quick interview we did with her when she came to play for Somewhere In The Universe at New Hero Nightclub this past July. Bumblebeez & Bang Gang Interview at Somewhere In The Universe (Modular Party)

Here's another one we've found in the archives for all you lucky people...sorry it's been a while but Bloggin' aint easy...this is from a party Somewhere In The Universe did in '08 with Modular Records. It featured Bumblebeez, The Bang Gang Deejays and The Modular DJs, it was also the first time we met Ladyhawke in person. Here's an interview we did with one of The Bumblebeez and one of the The Bang Gang, but let me warn you...as I remember it the guys had all on been the road and had done a TON of gigs leading up to this night, we'd given them a load of champagne & and jetlag was setting in - amazingly these two were the most coherent of the bunch, which is not saying a lot...in other words everyone involved was very tired and possibly more than a little drunk...after this not so triumphant interview we all headed backstage again where all members of Somewhere In The Universe, Modular Records and Midfield General were polishing off the rest off the drink...the video does give a sense of Bumblebeez excitng stage presence however. Later that night(6am later)found ourselves at a Greco Roman party with Joe Hot Chip, David E. Sugar and Drums Of Death, but thats a post for another time!

Every Friday at New Hero Nightclub we party hard and get home in bits rocked by the Somewhere In The Universe experience...we then wake up the next day still hungover and trawl through the archives of previous guests and EXCLUSIVE interviews we did with them, so far, Heartsrevolution, Kate Moross, Stopmakingme, Little Boots, La Roux, and Das Pop have all appeared now it's time for thos Canadian tearaways MSTRKRFT, a VERY revealing interview the former Death From Above 1979 counterparts reveal info about their yet to be released new album for the 'American' market 'BIGGIE SMALLS WASN'T THINKING, F**K I HOPE THE JAPS LIKE IT' and follows that up with the incredibly lude explanation for sexual scenario behind their track 'Easy Love'.

Back then - then being October 2006 - Somewhere In The Universe put on it's first ever live band - DATAROCK.

Probaby best known for their track Fa-Fa-Fa...

It was in fact their awesome slice of fun 'Computer Camp Love' that inspired us to bring the band to Somewhere In The Universe. This video is genius.

On the night we chatted to them about their club nights back home in Norway, their friend Annie whom you all know...and got them to sign our CD covers on which they scrawled 'We love you, no, we REALLY do.' The next time we saw the guys we bumped into them at Wireless Festival just ahead of their mainstage performance somewhere between openers Metronomy and closers Daft Punk, and witnessed their tracksuit clad performance once more. Fondly remembered not only because it was our first Somewhere In The Universe gig, but because we stole them from the NME tour and their gig with Klaxons the next night...I can still now quite clearly remember fighting the temptation to steal one of their very sweaty red tracksuits as they hung in our venue overnight...

Anyway we are very excited to say the guys are back this summer with a new abum due for release in May '09, it's the second track on the album 'Give It Up' which is first out the gate...here's a Kissy Sell Out remix which has been doing the rounds as of late..enjoy.

Das Pop Interview @ Somewhere In The Universe

As you may know from the post below (that rhymes), Belgian super rockers and Soulwax proteges Das Pop made an appearance recently for 'Somewhere In The Universe' at New Hero. It was a one of a kind night as any one was there witnessed a very special and intimate show for Das Pop on the first night of their U.K. tour, they were clearly pleased as they later blogged "It would be a crime to ask for a better opening night" on their myspace...

Usually found playing at major festivals or on tour with the likes of Soulwax, Gossip, The Kills, Justice etc. this was a rare opportunity to see them up close and personal or as Das Pop put it in the same blog "We were singing the songs eye to eye with the monster that is the Brighton crowd...Thanks for being as wonderful as you were."

We managed to grab a word with frontman Bent Van Looy 'backstage' and get a bit of the show on tape too. As per usual our Strong Look cameraman was nestled close to the speakers at the front due to the sold out audience on the night meaning you may encounter a bit of distortion in the performance part...but Bent gives us some useful insights on the various superstar Das Pop remixers plus friends and producers Soulwax 'I saw them last week, they are well'. Bent went pretty wild during the gig perhaps due to the intimate nature of the venue, and pretty much climbed on everything he could find, witness him climbing the speaker stack in order to lead the New Hero crowd in a sing-a-long...

Soulwax's pop prodigys DAS POP play live at New Hero Brighton!

DAS POP (www.myspace.com/daspop) are the pop prodigy’s of Belgian super producers SOULWAX, both hailing from Ghent, Belgium SOULWAX took a break from their world tour schedule to produce Das Pop’s album due for release in April ‘09.

Upon the release of their first single ‘Fool For Love’ Das Pop were immediately championed by French masters JUSTICE when they included them in their FABRIC LIVE mix in ‘08. The Sunday Times labelled the track "the momumental new single from the Belgian electro band". Fool For Love not only attracted critical acclaim but also an entire wave of top draw remixes by a virtual who’s who’s in dance music with reworkings from the men of AEROPLANE plus YUKSEK, BRODINKSI, and an absolute show stealing remix by ED BANGER Record’s own SEBASTIAN check it out:

NEW HERO is a new venue completly dedicated to club nights that are new, different & fun, the place will never compromise on quality. It's perfectly suited to our ethos as a night and finally we think we have found a venue who truly understands what 'Somewhere In The Universe' is all about!

New Look is Sarah Ruba and Adam Pavao. They met in Toronto in 2005 while involved in their own separate musical projects. Adam had been a part of numerous bands that had all ultimately met their demise. He decided to assemble a studio - a tool that would allow him to be musically independent. But something was still missing. Sarah came from a jazz background and had been singing for years. She knew however that she wanted to forge her own style and become not just a vocalist, but a well-rounded songwriter and musician. When she met Adam, she was given the opportunity to be creative in a much broader sense than ever before. With the studio as a tool, Sarah and Adam found themselves creating music that was completely new to both of them. Soon they relocated to Brooklyn (bringing their studio with them) to be closer to Sarah’s modeling work. As New Look’s sound developed, the studio doubled in size and capacity. Although the duo’s sound is in constant progression, they will be releasing an EP that summarizes their development through 2007. “How’s My Hair?” will be available in 2008.

Heartsrevolution Interview @ Somewhere In The Universe

As promised here's the first in our video interview series, this one is for New York hipsters Heartsrevolution (www.myspace.com/heartsrevolution) who hit 'Somewhere In The Universe' (www.myspace.com/somewhereintheuniverse) earlier in the year with their awesome brand of electro fuzz pop, the band were joined by graphic designer of the moment Kate Moross (http://www.katemoross.com/ - responsible for Punks Jump Up t-shirts and an almighty 24hour doodle in Oxford St Top Shop's window for the launch of her Top Shop range) who provided live vision mixing on the night.

Heartsrevolution are one of those rare bands that have the entire package of cool sound, great image and new ideas with classic style. Their vintage ice cream van that serves as a combination of portable record label hq / sweet shop / Japanese toy shop is indicitive of the band's no rules / new rules attitude otherwise known as their C.Y.O.A. Ed Banger Records at Somewhere In The Universe

So last Friday was one of our best parties ever at 'Somewhere In The Universe' with an anstonishing line-up that included Daft Punk & Justice manager Busy P, the amazing DJ Mehdi also from Ed Banger, and Midfield General of Skint. They played an astonishing set to a packed house ravenous for not only their tunes but for the Ed Banger t-shirts that Busy P was throwing out into the crowd (this nearly caused a small riot). Speaking of t-shirts...

Given that Busy P is the creator & boss of Ed Banger records there was a stunning array of Ed Banger Records t-shirts on display including 'Somewhere In The Universe's' own Chaos InShoes who managed to change from the 'Milk Cred' design to a Sebastian tee halfway through the night (and not even in the traditional white...it was black). Plus Mark Wrongson went to the trouble of printing up a 'BUSY P WHAT THE FUCK' tee (in reference to the opening lyrics of Busy P's track from Ed Rec Vol. 3) , you can see it pictured above alongside the man himself. One of the moments of the night came when Busy P 're-wound' the track numerous times so that the phrase echoed out over the soundsystem, which sent Mr Wrongson into fits of hysterical joy (I haven't included those pictures - but they do exsist). Prizes also go out to Mr Strong Look himself B.L. , who donned the strongest of looks by going for traditional 'short shorts' (see above). The moment of the night came for me when Busy P reached over and pinned a die cast metal Ed Banger badge directly on to my Henron tee (also pictured above), I felt as though I had been given some kind of Knighthood. BUSY P / DJ MEHDI / MIDFIELD GENERAL IN BRIGHTON

So tomorrow night (Friday June 27th) between 10pm and 4am (probably even later than that) the biggest & best single club night line-up to hit Brighton in 2008 will be upon us.

It's Somewhere In The Universe at Ocean Rooms with the manager of Daft Punk, Justice, & Cassius, and boss and creator of Ed Banger Records - Busy P, plus returning to 'Somewhere In The Universe' is the amazing DJ Mehdi also of Ed Banger responsible for incredible collabarations with Chromeo ('I Am Somebody'), Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter ('Signatune') and remixes for New Young Pony Club, Architecture In Helsinki and more. Not only that but Midfield General responsible for bringing Skint & Fatboy Slim to the nations ears, he's now working with likes of Soulwax and Justice on tracks like 'Disco Sirens' and has even been credited as an executive producer on Justice's world beating anthem, D.A.N.C.E.

This is an absolute must attend party and a very rare opportunity to see these guys in Brighton.

Here is a little taster of our interview with the almighty DJ Feadz from Ed Banger Records who completely blew our minds when he visited us in Brighton, he really was that brilliant.

To be honest I have absolutely no idea why this girl is asking Feadz this question, but she did, and we documented it.

So this blog is officially fully functioning, thanks to those who turned out for this past Friday's Blog launch party, we picked out a few of our favourite photos of people from the night...our selection is based mainly on those that provided us with amusing comments whilst being snapped, especially one guy here who is featured multiple times (we'll call him 'M.D.') who when we asked him why he had two pints of beer in hand he exclaimed 'because they so are flippin' cheap, I HAD to get two!'
